Amazon's Kindle

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/59794

I've never been a fan of ebooks and I'm really not sold on this for 4 reasons:

1. There is nothing better than spending a lazy day browsing the shelves of a new or used bookstore.
2. The smell of a new book when you first open the cover. Rates right up there with that new car smell.
3. The feel of a book in my hands, the pages, the glossy colorful cover, the sound a page makes when I turn to the next page
4. The sight of stacks and stacks of books in my home, on bookshelves, piled on tables and in stacks on the floor.

There are some things that just can't be replaced.

The only thing that might entice me to try e-books is if I had a very reader friendly e-reader and I was going on a long trip that had luggage restrictions. I could fit 50 or so books onto that one little device and be good to go for the entire trip. :-)

All of your reasons for preferring paper books, I stand behind. Nothing compares to being surrounded by books, being able to hold them and turn the pages, take in the scent of new books--even older musty ones--browsing through the shelves . . . I much prefer an old fashioned sort of book when all is said and done.

Thanks so much for adding me to your blogroll. I completely agree. They eyestrain alone keeps me from reading anything other than short stories online. Plus, it's hard to curl up in bed on a rainy day with a computer...even a laptop. That new book smell is wonderful...but I sort of prefer the library smell. I had to cut back my book habit when I moved here...space thing. I'm at the public library a lot. But when I sell the farm and move...I'm really looking for more space. I'd like to have a dedicated office/library. Floor to ceiling built-in bookcases for all my titles.

It would be very hard to decide what to read next, if you couldn't look at a stack of books. I've got several books on my laptop (for emergencies when I'm travelling) but somehow I never seem to get round to them. And I can't imagine pulling out an e-reader while you're waiting on the platform for a train.

I love books, too, but I have to say I was intrigued by this reader in a way that the earlier Sony Reader didn't impress me. For one thing, you have 200 books at a time in your reader.

I don't think I could get into reading a novel on one of these either. They might be okay for newspapers or magazines, but I think I will always prefer to have paper.

Oh, I love books, too. But living in an 860 sq. ft. bungalow, I have no room to store them. I agree with one of the other comments that although I read a lot online--newspapers, blogs and such, I just don't think I could read a book that way.

Just read your profile. I too am entertained by books and movies with a supernatural feel to them. Have you ever seen The Mothman Prophecies? Great, spooky feel and music. Not at all gross or gory (something I can't deal with in movies, or tv for that matter).

Thanks for visiting my blog!
